You had a long day at the office...meeting after meeting...problems that had to be resolved and you are feeling
the stress. Stress is not good for your overall health. It takes the joy and serenity out of life. You want a
stress reliever that allows you to reap the benefits of a physically healthy body and sound mind.
How about starting a vegetable garden?
Stress wreaks havoc on our overall health. The negative effects of stress in our life can create health problems
such as heart disease, depression, migraine, and others. Having a garden in your backyard is an easy way to relieve
stress. Since vegetable gardens are fairly easy to care for, it will not add to the stress you feel.
To relieve stress, you need to be able to completely relax and unwind. Putting the troubles of the week behind
you, you can put on your gardening attire, get in touch with nature and have the benefit of physical exercise on
the weekend. Physical exercise is a great stress reliever.
Gardening is much better than planning a trip that may include hours of travel, heavy traffic, and money for gas
and hotels. In today's economy, we are looking for ways to reduce our expenses. Growing your own vegetables will reduce food
expenses. If you yield more than your family needs, you can sell the extras at a farmer's market or to your
friends or neighbors. You can also donate extras to your local shelter or food bank.
Working inside prevents you from having exposure to natural sunlight. Getting enough sunlight while tending your
vegetable garden will significantly improve your mood. This is a good way to receive Vitamin D which is necessary
for proper absorption of calcium in your body. Although this can be a great way to get sunlight, you should
remember direct rays from the sun can cause skin damage and cancer. Your best gardening hours may be before 11
am and after 3 pm. Don't forget your hat!
Surveying the patch of land that is your vegetable will give you a great feeling,
knowing that you raised those healthy plants with your own hands. The activities you perform while working in your
garden - digging, raking, weeding, pruning, and harvesting - provide a constructive outlet for the stress that has
accumulated during the week.
Visualization is a good way to relieve stress. Picture yourself outside surrounded by plants that are healthy
and growing, teeming with life. Pick a rich, luscious tomato from a vine and hold it in your hands. Feel its firm
body, take a deep breath in and let it out. Feel the tension leaving your body.
Surrounding yourself with family, friends, and nature can help relieve the stresses we feel everyday.
